Breast Surgery Q & A

What is breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a type of breast surgery that focuses on rebuilding the shape and appearance of breast tissue. These procedures are most commonly performed after breast surgery to treat cancer, although some women need reconstruction after traumatic injury.

There are several options to choose from for breast reconstruction procedures. Some women prefer to incorporate breast implants to create fullness and optimal shape after losing breast tissue during cancer treatment.

For others, the focus is on restoring breast shape and appearance without introducing any synthetic substances into the body. In those cases, tissue reconstruction, also called flap surgery, is often preferred.

Some women have reconstruction procedures at the same time as their treatment surgery, including mastectomies. Others have reconstruction after they’ve healed from their initial breast procedures. When you have your reconstruction, you can always return later for “touch-up” procedures like fat grafting or scar revisions.

What kinds of breast surgery are used to treat cancer?

If your oncologist determines that your breast cancer is limited to a distinct area of your breast tissue, a procedure called a lumpectomy might be all that’s needed. This approach removes only the tumor itself in addition to a small portion of surrounding healthy tissue.

Mastectomy involves removing more breast tissue than just a tumor. Some women choose to have a preventive mastectomy to reduce the risk of cancer. Others have all or a portion of their breast tissue removed through mastectomy as part of their cancer treatment plan. The nearby lymph nodes can also be surgically removed.

What are some other types of breast surgery?

Breast reduction is a popular procedure among women with large or heavy breasts. This surgery removes excess breast tissue and reshapes the breast, creating a lifting effect and reducing the breasts’ overall size and weight.

A breast lift also reshapes the breast tissue by lifting and tightening the breasts. Your surgeon trims away excess skin, tightens remaining skin around the newly contoured breast tissue, and  carefully closes the incisions to enhance healing.

Breast augmentation uses implants to create enhanced shape and size. There are many different types of implants to choose from, each with specific benefits. Your specialist works with you to determine which options best suit your needs and goals.
